From flaky self-hosting to a resilient AWS home

N8n to Amazon ECS Migration

About

A SaaS B2B business working with Cloud Combinator on AWS. The client is anonymised at their request.

Challenge

The challenge had three focus areas, each essential to giving the client a platform it could depend on.

Ending the downtime and data loss

The core problem was that the self-hosted service cleared its data every time the team logged in. The migration had to preserve n8n's workflows, credentials and triggers on durable, persistent storage so that state survived restarts and the downtime simply went away.

Replacing the model layer with Amazon Bedrock

The client's workflows called OpenAI models directly. These had to be replaced, like for like, with models available in Amazon

A repeatable, well-documented platform

The result could not be an one-off. The client needed the environment expressed as infrastructure as code, deployed into its own AWS account, and handed over with documentation and knowledge transfer so its team could own and extend it.

Solution

Cloud Combinator structured the work as three tight milestones over roughly four weeks, with weekly progress meetings throughout.

0

State cleared on login, ending the downtime of the previous host

Multi-model

On-demand switching across Amazon Bedrock LLMs

2 weeks

Post-migration aftercare and support included

By the numbers:

  • 0 - State cleared on login, ending the downtime of the previous host
  • Multi-model - On-demand switching across Amazon Bedrock LLMs
  • 2 weeks - Post-migration aftercare and support included
Changes

Cloud Combinator delivered the migration against its original scope, standing up a stable ECS-hosted n8n platform in the client's account, moving the model layer to Amazon Bedrock, and

  • Reliable by designPersistent storage on Amazon ECS means workflows, credentials and triggers survive restarts and logins, removing the data-loss fault that caused downtime on render.io.
  • Model flexibilityAction-based routing lets the client switch between Amazon Bedrock models on demand, making it easy to test and compare model performance.
  • Owned and repeatableThe platform is deployed in the client's own AWS account as Amazon CloudFormation templates, handed over in a versioned Git repository with sample workflows and test scripts.
  • Knowledge transferredA workshop, architecture diagram and walkthrough video left the client's team able to manage n8n workflows and swap Bedrock models themselves.
  • HandoverA two-week aftercare period backed the team as they took the new platform into everyday use.

Confirming that the AWS environment is suitable for the client's continued development. The build was signed off through the agreed acceptance process.

With a stable, model-agnostic platform now running on AWS, the client is free to focus on building agentic products for its customers rather than fighting its hosting, on a foundation that is ready to scale with whatever it takes on next.

AWS Stack

Amazon ECS

For containerised, resilient hosting of the n8n workflow engine.

Amazon Bedrock

For access to a suite of large language models with on-demand model switching.

Amazon VPC

For network isolation of the n8n services through subnets and security groups.

AWS IAM

For scoped roles and policies governing ECS tasks and image pulls.

Amazon CloudFormation

For repeatable, infrastructure-as-code deployment into the client's account.

Amazon ECR

For storage of the container images used by the ECS tasks.
