From a single EC2 host to an orchestrated AWS platform

AWS Infrastructure Modernisation

About

A SaaS B2B business working with Cloud Combinator on AWS. The client is anonymised at their request.

Challenge

The modernisation focused on four critical issues in the existing architecture.

A single point of failure

One EC2 instance carried too many critical workloads, so a failure of that host would take down multiple environments and services at once. The platform needed high availability across its critical services.

Build-induced instability

Resource-intensive builds ran on the same compute as production, which had already caused out-of-memory conditions and live instability. Builds needed to be removed from the runtime entirely.

No true environment isolation

Production, development, and preview workloads were collocated, sharing compute, secrets, and supporting services with no hard boundaries. Each environment needed independent infrastructure and configuration.

Manual infrastructure and limited scaling

Parts of the platform were configured by hand, and Dockerised services ran on EC2 without orchestration, auto-healing, or independent autoscaling. The platform needed repeatable, code-defined infrastructure and managed scaling.

Solution

Cloud Combinator delivered the work in clearly defined phases for a controlled, low-risk transition from the current architecture to the target state.

By the numbers:

  • 6 - Core services containerised on ECS Fargate
  • 6 - Delivery phases from discovery to operations
  • 100% - Of infrastructure defined as code (target)
Changes

Acceptance is measured against the platform operating without a single point of failure, with production, development, and staging fully isolated, all infrastructure defined as code, CI/CD handling build, test, and deployment without touching live workloads, and every service containerised and independently scalable on an orchestrated platform.

  • No single point of failureWorkloads move off one shared EC2 host onto independently scaling, auto-healing ECS Fargate services.
  • Stable productionBuilds are fully separated from the runtime, ending the out-of-memory conditions caused by building in place.
  • Isolated environmentsProduction and non-production are separated across infrastructure, configuration, and secrets.
  • Reproducible infrastructureA parameterised CloudFormation codebase deploys consistent environments on demand.
  • HandoverDeployment runbooks, rollback procedures, and recorded walkthroughs equip the client's team to operate the platform.

With a resilient, code-defined foundation in place, the client is positioned to scale each service on its own terms, onboard enterprise requirements such as environment isolation and data residency, and evolve its AI control plane from a stable operational base.
