Charting a route from private cloud to AWS

MAP Lite Cloud Migration

About

A SaaS B2B business working with Cloud Combinator on AWS. The client is anonymised at their request.

Challenge

The engagement had three focus areas.

Understanding the estate without intrusive tooling

For security reasons the client could not permit tool based discovery of the third-party provider environment, so the assessment had to be built from an itemised list of their virtual machines, fileservers, databases and aviation specific applications, and translated accurately into an AWS target design.

Designing a low risk, like-for-like move

The goal was to re-platform the majority of the existing infrastructure with minimal disruption, preserving how essential services run today while introducing AWS best practices around identity, networking and cost from the outset.

Building the business case

The client needed a credible AWS cost model and a clear migration path, plus an understanding of the funding and credits available, so leadership could decide whether to proceed with a full migration from a third-party provider.

Solution

We ran the MAP Lite Assess phase as a structured path from discovery to a decision ready migration plan, working closely with the client at each stage.

A third-party provider to

Like-for-like re-platform strategy defined

$8,555/mo

AWS run cost modelled for the target estate (projected)

AWS MGN

Continuous replication and low downtime cutover planned

By the numbers:

  • A third-party provider to - Like-for-like re-platform strategy defined
  • $8,555/mo - AWS run cost modelled for the target estate (projected)
  • AWS MGN - Continuous replication and low downtime cutover planned
Changes

The MAP Lite Assess phase delivered exactly what it set out to: a clear picture of the client's estate, a like-for-like AWS migration strategy, and a costed business case that lets them decide on a full migration from a third-party provider with confidence.

  • Estate assessedThe third-party provider environment of Windows VMs, fileservers, databases and aviation applications mapped to an AWS target design, without intrusive discovery tooling.
  • Migration strategy definedA like-for-like re-platform using AWS Application Migration Service, DataSync and Amazon FSx, preserving permissions and Active Directory integration.
  • Resilience by designA plan for AWS Backup snapshots, disaster recovery and business continuity that a third-party provider could not offer at reasonable cost.
  • Business case builtAn AWS Pricing Calculator model plus exploration of MAP funding and credits to underpin the decision to migrate.
  • HandoverFindings and documentation delivered with a knowledge transfer session for the client's technical team.

With their estate assessed, a migration strategy in hand and the numbers to support it, the client are positioned to move from a third-party provider to AWS and unlock the on-demand flexibility, resilience and cost control that first drew them to the cloud.

AWS Stack

AWS Application Migration Service

For continuous replication and low downtime cutover of Windows virtual machines.

Amazon EC2

For the re-platformed compute estate on AWS.

Amazon FSx

With AWS DataSync for migrating fileservers while preserving NTFS permissions.

AWS Backup

For EBS volume snapshots supporting disaster recovery.

AWS IAM Identity Center

And Amazon VPC for least privilege access and network isolation.
