Building a secure digital front door for cervical screening

Digital Smear Test Application PoC

About

A SaaS B2B business working with Cloud Combinator on AWS. The client is anonymised at their request.

Challenge

The engagement had three focus areas.

A frictionless, zero touch user experience

The product depends on patients, clinical staff and lab users interacting with samples via barcodes without manual data entry. The frontend had to make that flow effortless across the different user types while remaining simple to operate.

Security worthy of personal health data

Every design decision had to protect sensitive health information. That meant properly secured storage, controlled access and an architecture that could stand up to the scrutiny that healthcare data attracts, from the proof of concept onwards rather than as an afterthought.

A foundation the client could build on

As an early stage product team, the client needed more than a demo. They needed confidence that AWS was the right platform to scale on, best practices baked in around security, billing and recovery, and their own technical lead upskilled to continue development.

Solution

We delivered the engagement through Cloud Combinator's six stage Cloud Accelerator, working alongside the client's founder and technical lead throughout so knowledge transferred as the build progressed.

6-stage

Cloud Accelerator, from discovery to Well-Architected review

Amplify PoC

Functional secure frontend delivered in the client's AWS account

25,000

Monthly users the architecture is costed to support (projected)

By the numbers:

  • 6-stage - Cloud Accelerator, from discovery to Well-Architected review
  • Amplify PoC - Functional secure frontend delivered in the client's AWS account
  • 25,000 - Monthly users the architecture is costed to support (projected)
Changes

The engagement met its acceptance criteria: a functional proof of concept frontend on AWS Amplify, the client's technical lead signed off as competent to continue development, and clear evidence that AWS is a suitable environment for the product to grow in.

  • Working proof of conceptA functional Amplify frontend, delivered in the client's own AWS account and handed back with a full explanation of its operation.
  • Security first designSecured S3 storage and a private, access-controlled data tier suited to handling personal health information.
  • Best practices embeddedA baseline of security, billing and recovery practices plus a completed Well-Architected Framework Review over the stack.
  • Team upskilledA hands on immersion day and sign off of the client's technical lead, leaving them equipped to carry the product forward.
  • HandoverThe application and its architecture were returned to the client in their own environment, ready for continued development.

With a secure proof of concept proven and a Well-Architected foundation in place, the client are positioned to move from prototype towards a production platform, confident that AWS can support the product as it scales.
