Bringing the whole platform home to AWS

Supabase to AWS Migration

About

A SaaS B2B business working with Cloud Combinator on AWS. The client is anonymised at their request.

Challenge

The migration focused on three areas: relieving operational and compliance constraints, unlocking elastic scalability, and preserving continuity throughout the move.

Operational and compliance constraints

Running Supabase outside AWS meant the client carried operational burden and compliance friction that a managed, AWS-native stack could reduce, while consolidating the platform within a single governed cloud account.

Scalability limits

The existing hosting model constrained how the database and services could scale with demand. Moving to Aurora Serverless v2 and ECS Fargate would let capacity track load rather than being fixed.

Continuity during migration

Data integrity and a low-disruption cut-over were essential. The plan relied on database dumps plus AWS DMS change capture and a canary traffic shift so the switch-over could be staged and reversible.

Solution

Cloud Combinator ran the migration as a sequence of discovery, design, build, validation and cut-over stages, authoring CloudFormation modules for each service component so the environment could be deployed consistently.

Changes

Acceptance was structured around sign-off of the delivery scope against the success criteria, confirmation of the internal the client's tech lead's competence, and confirmation that the AWS environment is suitable for continued development. The cost figures below are projected from the SoW estimate.

  • Database migratedThe Postgres database moved to Aurora Serverless v2, with AWS DMS providing ongoing change capture for a low-risk cut-over.
  • Containerised servicesSupabase micro-services now run on ECS Fargate behind an ALB, on private subnets for security.
  • Edge and storageAmazon S3 holds storage objects, fronted by CloudFront with signed-URL caching.
  • Secure admin accessSupabase Studio is hosted on AWS Amplify and access-restricted through IAM Identity Center.
  • HandoverAs-built documentation, recorded sessions and a two-hour enablement session were delivered, with the whole stack provisioned as CloudFormation.

With the platform now running on AWS-native managed services and defined as code, the client has a foundation that is easier to operate, scale and extend. Capabilities noted as follow-on work, such as GraphQL enablement, can be layered on as the AWS ecosystem and the client's needs evolve.

AWS Stack

Amazon Aurora Serverless

V2 for the migrated Postgres database with capacity that scales to demand.

Amazon ECS Fargate

For running the containerised Supabase micro-services without managing servers.

Amazon CloudFront

For edge delivery of storage objects with signed-URL caching.

AWS Database Migration Service

For ongoing change capture and a low-disruption cut-over.

AWS CloudFormation

For reproducible, infrastructure-as-code deployment of the whole stack.
