A private-by-default move from Azure to AWS

Azure to AWS Migration

About

A SaaS B2B business working with Cloud Combinator on AWS. The client is anonymised at their request.

Challenge

The migration had four focus areas, each of which had to be met for the move to be worthwhile.

Marketplace-first

The headline goal was to be listed and transactable on AWS Marketplace as a SaaS product, which meant integrating entitlement and metering and passing the AWS Foundational Technical Review.

A low-risk migration

The platform had to move from a spread of Azure services onto AWS with minimal code change and zero-downtime deployment patterns, so customers would see no disruption.

Private-by-default security

No internal service could be exposed to the public internet: private connectivity to MongoDB Atlas, secure staff access, and layered protection against attack were all requirements from the outset.

Operational maturity and scale

The target platform needed Multi-AZ resilience, auto-scaling, centralised observability and a tested disaster-recovery position, not just a like-for-like lift.

Solution

We ran the migration in phases so that foundations, platform and data were proven before workloads moved, and hardening and cutover came last.

Under 45

Targeted cutover impact window (projected)

Zero

Public inbound endpoints to internal services

Multi-AZ

Resilience across the application layer

By the numbers:

  • Under 45 - Targeted cutover impact window (projected)
  • Zero - Public inbound endpoints to internal services
  • Multi-AZ - Resilience across the application layer
Changes

The migration was defined against a clear definition of done: a production cutover with a tight user-impact window and no data loss, a satisfied AWS Foundational Technical Review checklist, validated backups and disaster recovery, and runbooks and workshops handed over to the client's team.

  • Marketplace-readyA SaaS listing with AWS Marketplace entitlement and metering integrated, underpinned by an AWS Foundational Technical Review.
  • Minimal-change migrationWeb and API workloads containerised to Amazon ECS on Fargate, and Azure Functions replatformed to AWS Lambda, with blue-green deploys for zero-downtime releases.
  • Private by defaultNo public inbound access to internal services, MongoDB Atlas reached over AWS PrivateLink, AWS Client VPN for staff, and AWS WAF, AWS Shield, Amazon GuardDuty and AWS Security Hub for layered protection.
  • Resilient and observableMulti-AZ with auto-scaling, Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL with read replicas and point-in-time recovery, and centralised CloudWatch and X-Ray observability.
  • HandoverAdmin and on-call runbooks, a disaster-recovery runbook, and AWS workshops delivered to the client's team.

With the platform on AWS and Marketplace-ready, the client is set up for what comes next: a follow-on phase for full multi-region active-active operation and ongoing cost optimisation, building on foundations designed with that growth in mind.

AWS Stack

Amazon ECS

On AWS Fargate for the containerised web and API tier with blue-green deployments.

AWS Lambda

For the replatformed function workloads.

Amazon RDS

For PostgreSQL, Multi-AZ with read replicas, for the relational data layer.

Amazon S3

For private object storage.

AWS PrivateLink

And AWS Client VPN for private connectivity to services and staff access.

Amazon CloudWatch

And AWS X-Ray for observability, with AWS Marketplace for SaaS listing, entitlement and metering.
